A family letter for March 2013

March 31, 2013

Dear Family and friends, (Ladd and Sharla)

This Easter has been renewing in nature.  I was taking a walk with Ruby and Alyssa (my 6 and 2 year old) yesterday.  I asked them what Easter was all about.  Ruby said it was about getting candy.  Alyssa mentioned the Easter bunny.  I explained to them it was about the suffering, death, and resurrection of our Savior, Jesus Christ.  I testified to them that despite Jesus dying, he lives today.  Ruby said, “Yes, as a spirit.”  I squeezed her hand and told her that he has a body of flesh and bone and would be able to feel her squeeze his hand.  The wonder on her face was priceless.

Being able to see the flowers peek through the newly exposed dirt in our front yard reminds me of the renewal of life; the promise of re-birth and the chance to start anew despite our choices in the past.  Perhaps, the biggest visual of this reminder has been in our new baby girl, Shalyn Susanna.  She was born a week and a half ago and is brand new from Heavenly Father.   The reverence our other nine children give her and the awe in their eyes as they hold her and marvel at how tiny she is constantly reminds me of the miracle of birth and Heavenly Father’s plan for each of us that brings us such happiness as we live it day by day.  And to think, the Savior made all of this possible.  We’ve all been infinitely blessed!

March has been crazy busy.  Many people asked me when we were going to have this baby and I simply had no answer for them.  Finally, the doctor actually said I could be induced a week early, and I jumped at the chance with my eyes closed and faith wide open.  My mom rearranged her schedule and came to stay with us for just over a week.  She told me a couple of children ago that she could no longer aid my education since she’d never had this many children (she had six).  Unfortunately, I believed her.  Ladd and I have watched as she has kept my sink clean and my table clear for a whole week!  She spent time researching dinner recipes and would start dinner in the late morning if necessary.  When she wasn’t putting laundry in the washer or running children around to their activities, she was sitting playing with one of my children or connecting with her own family.  She has her priorities in the right place and isn’t afraid to work hard to accomplish her goals.  She is a tremendous example to me!

Ladd has been excelling as the manager of the night shift for Fidelity and teaching skiing part time up at Deer Valley.  He’s been trying to interview for manager positions that would place him during the week day and provide better support for me and the children.  He’s been passed over a number of times.  This week, he was handed a new team to manage without needing to interview.  After his two weeks of paternity leave that starts tomorrow, he will be working in American Fork (instead of the Gateway) Monday thru Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.  We feel very blessed!  Ladd is the Primary teacher for the nine year olds in our ward.  He’s a great example of how to magnify every calling no matter what it is we are asked to do.

Garrett is 16 years old now.   He has his permit and has everything done except for 22 hours driving with Ladd or me.  Garrett just finished playing in the pit for his high school’s production of “Once Upon a Mattress.”  He’s also been doing track for the first time ever.  He’s doing both the long distance and the sprinting events.  He participated in a group ensemble with his drumline for region solo and ensemble called “Aboriginal Dreams.”  He has nine different instruments he has to play during the song.  It got a Superior and will be competing at State.

Cali made drum major for next year for marching band as well as dance team.  However, their schedules conflict during the summer and it is looking like she won’t be allowed to do the dance team as a result.  Cali has been doing sprints at track.  One of her coaches asked her if she was Cali Olsen.  When she said she was, he said, “You can run!”  Cali’s clarinet solo also made state.  Cali’s Alliance dance company concert was amazing.  Cali also has her driver’s permit.

Cecilia is enjoying being on her middle school’s dance company.  She’s getting 100% on her math tests.  She is progressing really well on the piano.  And, she’s a great help for me!!

Jarom is at a Star rank in Boy Scouts.  He is working really hard at staying up to date on his grades and homework.  And, he’s in percussion and choir at school.  He’s going to be starting drumline at the middle school.

James is almost done with the requirements for his Arrow of Light.  He is doing ballroom at the Elementary school.  He loves drawing pandas and playing with his friends.

Mckenzie loves climbing and is waiting for her mother to sign her up for gymnastics.  She loves Activity Days.  During the last couple of days, she’s taken to dribbling a basketball.  We’ll see how long that lasts. . . .

Ruby is in her Elementary’s play.  There are over 100 children in it.  It’s a rendition of various songs over the past decades.  She loves being in it!

Lena is constantly busy.  When she has some down time, she runs in a circle in our living room while she talks to me.  She loves playing with friends in the neighborhood.  She also loves being in real Primary this year.

Alyssa loves her nursery class.  She loves being a big sister.  And, she’s been slowly potty training herself over the last week and a half!  She and Lena are great friends (when they get along!) and are marvelous partners in crime.  I’ve listed out all the adventures they’ve had in the past three months alone on our blog:  ourolsenolympians.blogspot.com

Shalyn Susanna has lots of dark brown hair.  She was 8 lbs. 6 oz. and was 19 ½ inches long at birth.  She’s had jaundice and has been under lights over the last week.  Hopefully we’re past that now. . . .  She has a sweet disposition and a high squeal when she’s unhappy.  She seems ever so patient for the most part.  She is very loved!!!

For those of you who are not aware, I am one of 60 authors in a book called:  “Deliberate Motherhood:  12 powers of peace, joy, love, and order” (At least I think that’s the title – I’ve loaned out all my copies so I can’t verify!).  It’s a great compilation of advice for mothers of all situations and backgrounds.  I loved reading it.  It’s worth finding and reading it in your spare time J. (Because we all have spare time, right?!)    I’m feeling great and hoping I’ll be able to figure out ten children quickly!  That process should be extremely interesting if not entertaining – 5 years down the road. J  I’m the choir director and have managed to lead us in two Easter songs today as well as one song for ward conference last week.  I’ve enjoyed having the testimony of our Savior’s resurrection running through my mind in the form of these songs over the last couple of weeks.  Most enriching.

We’re healthy and happy (generally!).  We’re hoping all is well with you and yours!

Love,

Ladd and Sharla and Garrett, Cali, Cecilia, Jarom, James, Mckenzie, Ruby, Lena, Alyssa, and Shalyn

Poke, Poke, Poke. . . .

Friday, March 22nd, I was greeted by the nurse (I was still in the hospital) who informed me that Shalyn's billiruben was high (11) and she had been under lights since 5 a.m. and wouldn't be able to go home until she'd been re-tested for several different things and had been under the lights at least six hours.  Since Ladd had hoped to come pick me up between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., I started wondering how I was going to get home and if Shalyn would be able to go with me.  It was a busy morning.  I talked to both my OBGYN and the Pediatrician and the lactation specialist.  The lactation specialist just didn't see the point in coming to talk to someone who'd just had her tenth child!  I had to assure her that nursing wasn't my forte.  "How about that!" was her response.  I also talked to a man who was arranging for us to get a billi-bed to take home for Shalyn to use.  After telling me he'd gladly exchange his insurance for ours, he told me I get the mother of the year award since it'd been at least a full year since he'd met someone who was in there with their 10th.  After waiting for results from Shalyn's blood tests, they said her billiruben had dropped to 10.5 and that the other test had come back negative (which was a positive thing.)  My lunch had sat getting cold for 2 hours before I got to it, and Ladd arrived soon afterwards.  We packed up and headed home.  The guy with the billi-bed and billi-blanket (really NOT a blanket by any sense of the word!!!) met us once we got here.  After we got home and got Ladd off to work, I went to see how Cali was doing trying out for Westlake Dance Team.  She made it!!!!  I was soooo excited for her!  The rest of Shalyn's first week flew by in a blur.  That first night, I had only 2 hours of sleep.  I took Shalyn in on Saturday to have her billiruben tested.  They told me I needed to make it there between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m.  It took me two full hours to get out of the house and I'd started at 7 a.m.!!!  It says something to my state of mind that a mother of 10 children forgot to bring even one diaper for her baby -- much less a diaper bag full of useful stuff!  I also managed to set off an alarm while waiting for Shalyn's blood to be taken.  Luckily, the snow was manageable that morning!  Shalyn's billiruben's level went up to 14.4.  Later, I went shopping with mom Hinton and even got my hair cut!!!!

Sunday dawned bright and terrible.  I managed to get 6 hours of sleep, thankfully!  I made it to the hospital to have Shalyn's blood drawn and still made it home in time for the choir practice I'd set up the week before.  (I set the alarm off again at the hospital :()  Ladd and I went back for the kids after the practice, and somehow, we lost mom Hinton on the way to church.  I guess she sat in the back.  The choir song turned out fine for ward conference.  I very much felt public scrutiny that hour.  I talked to a few people after Sacrament meeting who hurried up to get a peek before I left to get Shalyn back under lights.  I was getting quite a bit concerned.  Shalyn just couldn't seem to go throughout the night without choking several times as well as spitting up or throwing up all she was getting from the bottles or from me.  I found that Shalyn's billiruben had gone up to 15.2.    After church, we had choir, and after choir, we did calendaring and had the kids do their lunches for Monday before ushering them out the door for their visit to Mapleton.  Mom Hinton and I had lots of talks.  Maryam Cheney dropped a huge dinner off and Gayleen Bennett came over to help me with the nursing thing.  She said that Shalyn wasn't bringing her tongue down far enough which was causing me major pain!  Mom Hinton skyped with Dustin, Dad Hinton, and Melanie.  I heard a little of it, and at least introduced Shalyn to them.

Shalyn and I didn't get much sleep that night.  I only got about 2 hours of sleep and spent some time sobbing because of all my frustrations.  I guess Shalyn kept mom Hinton up, too and so she only got 4 hours of sleep.  The kids got off to school because of mom Hinton.  Ladd had Deer Valley.  I took Shalyn to the hospital to get poked again.  I got done at the hospital with enough time to get to the doctor for Shalyn.  Dr. Edwards said her billiruben was down to 14.0 (which was good), but that her weight was down to 7 lbs. 9.5 oz. (which was bad -- 10% below her birth weight.)  He told me not to stress about the lights as much and to simply get her to gain an ounce in a 24 hour period.  He also told me to get more sleep!  (He did admit that was like telling someone not to breath)  He suggested that we keep Shalyn upright after she'd eaten for a half an hour to see if it would cut down on the throw-up and spit up.  That provided a drastic change!  She seemed to do much better putting that small bit of advice into practice.  I was almost only pumping by now.  I was very close to simply pumping for the next year!!!  It was proving to be less painful!!!

I got around 4 1/2 hours of sleep, and it seemed an easy morning since mom Hinton was still doing everything, and I didn't have to go anywhere until the afternoon.  I took Shalyn in to get a weight on her and we found she was back up to 7 lbs. 11.5 oz.  Yeah!!!!  Ladd did Deer Valley again.  In the evening, Ladd helped teach the YM/YW square dancing for trek.  He was all decked out in cowboy gear!  He looked great!

I got around 5 1/2 hours of sleep that night.  I finally dragged myself and Shalyn into the hospital to be tested.  It turns out Shalyn was down to 13.0.  We turned off our account for the billi-bed and packed both of them up.  (YEAH!!!)  I turned my thoughts to conquering the whole nursing thing while mom Hinton was still around.  Ladd went to Fidelity Investments in the early afternoon.  Cecilia made the 2nd dance of Nicole's and she went to BYU Day of Dance.  Dad Hinton came in the late afternoon.  Mom Hinton was madly trying to get dinner on in time for Garrett and Cali's  band concert.  Mom and Dad Hinton had to take off after Garrett and Cali's band finished their songs.  They took Ruby home with them.  I left before the concert was finished.  It was a mad scramble to get the kids into bed and everything ready for the next morning.

Thursday dawned bright and early!  I managed to get everyone off with Garrett being the only one to forget something -- his lunch.  So, I took him his lunch on my way to the hospital to get Shalyn poked once again.  Mom Hinton had arrived shortly before I had to go, so I was able to leave knowing Lena and Alyssa were in good hands.  Shalyn's billiruben dropped to 11.8 so they said we didn't have to have it checked again unless we saw her looking distinctly yellow or if she wasn't eating right or pooping right.  Cali talked to Ms. Stowell on Wednesday about the summer conflicts between dance and marching band.  It looks rather bleak for Cali staying on the dance team.  I'm rather torn up about it since I'm thinking that was Cali's one time to make it onto the dance team during High School (she won't have the opportunities to be as well prepped as she was this year coming onto it from Alliance).  Mom Hinton only stayed until the late afternoon.

Friday was awesome cause I didn't have to go anywhere!!!  I'm struggling still with the whole nursing thing.  Not fun for me!  Mom Hinton came for a short period of time and helped me get the house looking a little better before she left for good.  Luckily, my visiting teachers (Bonnie Sampson and Yosha Spens) brought dinner in for us that night!  Ladd was home for the day since it was Good Friday.  He had just found out he was being given another team that works down in American Fork Monday thru Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. -- all without interviewing!!!  It still seems surreal to me.  A great blessing, though!  And, since it's supposed to start April 1st, we're feeling blessed that he's still able to take off for his two weeks paternity leave!

Saturday, Jarom went to the second day of BYU POWWOW.  And, Ladd took James on down to the Easter egg hunt at Neptune park where they got candy and were able to see the Easter Bunny.  Evidently, the Easter Bunny was the hit of the day for Lena and Alyssa!!!  Then, he brought them back and took them over to the park for the HOA Easter egg hunt.  We did some cleaning and Cali, Cecilia and I were able to go to the General YW's broadcast at the Stake Center.  Given that it was Easter eve, it was a late night for Ladd and I!!!

Today, the kids woke up to find their Easter baskets filled with candy.  We managed to get to church on time without too many incidents!  The choir numbers turned out marvelously beautiful.  I ended up leading the last song for Sister Wilkins since I was already up there.  :)

Well, our house is a wreck, and everyone seems happy.  Most of all, I'm hoping for no more pokes for awhile!!!!

Welcome, Shalyn Susanna!!!

*Disclaimer* -- The following account will be a detailed account of my experience over the last couple of days and may contain content you do not wish to know.  Please be advised. . . .   :)

Monday, March 18th was a long day.  Ladd was at Deer Valley, and I cleaned and prepared as best as I could for my up coming induction on Wednesday.   FHE was a strange affair with our family split into two groups.  Cali, Cecilia, Jarom and I went to see Garrett perform in the Pitt for "Once Upon a Mattress."  Ladd took James on down for a short visit to Artic Circle.

Tuesday, I did my visiting teaching, and then seemed too tired to do the myriad chores awaiting my attention.  Finally, when the kids got home, I kicked it into high gear (and the kids as well) and we cruised through all my chores.  My mom arrived and happy was our house and everyone in it!!!  The rest of the night was spent filling my mom in on what looked to be an insurmountable task ahead -- keeping our house running without my inherent knowledge of the calendar readily available!

Wednesday dawned bright and early.  I ran Cali to the school by 6 a.m. for dance tryout practices.  I ran Garrett to early morning Seminary by 6:30 a.m.  I got the rest of the kids up, and after devotional, headed them all on their way.  Mom observed my every move.  Her comment to me went something like this, "I got up early to see how you did everything and now I don't think I can do it, but we'll muddle thru somehow."  (I have a feeling her muddling thru would teach me some new tricks!!!)  I had just sent Mckenzie and Ruby out the door, gotten James reading, heard Ladd's alarm go off, and sat down to my small bowl of Total when the phone rang.  It was the hospital.  We were given one hour to be to the hospital for my induction.  I kicked it into high gear.  I gobbled down my cereal, had a quick shower, shoved last minute things into my bag, and Ladd and I hurried out the door after passing the baton to my mom and hugging the last remaining children I still had at home.

We got to the hospital by 9 a.m.  We were admitted, and ushered to a room (#1) where I got dressed into my lovely hospital gown.  Two nurses were busy doing various things in the room while Ladd sat in his chair.  One immediately proceeded to try to put an IV in my arm, but after two rather excruciating tries, she turned the job over to the other nurse.  Nurse #2 got the IV into my right forearm, and tried to draw my blood from the inserted IV needle.  She couldn't get anything out of it, so she taped it down and moved to my left arm to try normal methods for drawing blood.  Her next attempt left a huge purple bruise in the crook of my left arm, then she finally found success near my wrist in my left arm.  Five vials later, and she assured me they would find out quickly whether my platelates were too low or not -- my chance for an epidural hung on the outcome.  At 10 a.m., my "real" nurse, Michelle, came in and got my pitocen going into my IV.  Shortly afterward, she came back into my room and admitted that the blood hadn't been sent down to be processed yet, and she'd just sent it down.  About an hour and two or three bathroom trips later, she came in to announce that my platelates were 116 -- quite a drop from my last result of 145, but still epidural worthy.  I requested an epidural as soon as possible.  By noon, I had an epidural working on my body, and boy, did it feel great!!!  Shortly after getting my epidural, my left eye went blurry and I found it felt puffy around my eye and it was incredibly hard to keep it open.  My epidural was adjusted immediately, and I was turned over.  Soon, that side effect was gone and it became a waiting game.  At 1:30 p.m., I was told I was at a 3.  My baby's heart beat kept dipping so I found myself attached to an oxygen mask and turned rather often.  Ladd and I watched three episodes of season four of Murdoch Mysteries during the afternoon and into the evening.  Sometimes I rested.  Sometimes we just talked.  It was lovely.  The only complaints that I found were my hands went numb for a period of time, but that eventually wore off for both of my hands.  I really didn't like my blood pressure cuff, but it was hardly the stuff of distraction!  Especially since my nurse kindly kept it off me most of the time!  The only other thing was the elastic on the oxygen mask bit into the top of my ears.  Little piddly complaints if you ask me.  I went through labor nearly pain free!!!!  It was either the four or five o'clock hour that I finally got to a four.  An hour later, when they checked me, I was at an eight.  I thought for sure I would hustle along, but no.  Sometime after seven, they checked me to say I was technically at a nine, but I had a little bit of a lip all the way around that was thicker on the right side.  The doctor tried to have me push that lip away, but it wouldn't.  I believe it was during that bout of pushing that all of the blood capillaries in my face popped leaving my with red dots all over my face, upper back, neck, and so on.  It's a condition called petechiae (said pitiki eye).  I must say, I've never had that before and it was quite a shock when I finally glanced in a mirror!!!!  Ten after eight, the doctor came in and checked me.  Once again we tried to push it away and the doctor thought I might be able to do it, so a hoard of nurses rushed into my room getting everything ready.  Once everything and everyone was in place, the doctor told me to push and a couple of pushes later, she was out.  Immense relief!!!  I was no longer pregnant and one child richer!!!  I held Shalyn Susanna before they'd even cleaned her off.  She looked beautiful.  LOTS of dark brown hair!!!  Pinch-able cheeks, and a pug nose defined her features.  The doctor announced I hadn't torn at all.  Perfect record so far!!!  The nurses took Shalyn away while I got rid of the placenta and Ladd followed Shalyn with his camera ready.  The first thing I heard the nurses say was she urinated and passed a bowel movement.  Eventually they weighed her and found she was 8 lbs. 6 oz. and 19 1/2 in. long.  When they handed her back to me, I tried to nurse her, but she was content to just be held.  After awhile, Shalyn started sticking out her tongue, so we tried again to nurse.  She figured out quickly how to latch on.  Throughout the evening, if we did something she didn't like, she'd wail for a couple of seconds, then stop as if she'd finished communicating her complaint of what she hadn't liked and expected us to know already.  Adorable!!!  Eventually, they took her down to the nursery with Ladd in her wake.  They pulled out my catheter, cleaned up the room, cleaned me up and helped me into the wheel chair.  They got me settled into my new room on the second floor (#226).

My stay at the hospital has been pleasant.  My sleep hasn't been all that great, but that's to be expected.  I loved having my shower this morning!  And, this morning, I attended the meeting that allows you to be discharged.  I've enjoyed ordering my own food, playing on my phone, filling out papers, reading my book a little, and playing with Shalyn.  Ladd brought Lena and Alyssa to visit this afternoon.  They both came into my room wondering if I was okay.  Alyssa kept asking me if I was sick.  Lena's main question was, "Mom, where's the hole in your tummy?"  I showed her my tummy and reassured her that there wasn't a hole in my tummy.  "Then how did the baby come out?!!"  I told her the baby came out through my bottom.  Clutching her own bottom, she scrunched up her face in painful reflection as she tried to make sense of what I had told her!!  :)  We sat Lena and Alyssa in the same chair and let them take turns holding her.  Lena said, "This was the best baby I never seen!!!"  Alyssa kept hugging Shalyn's lower half and saying, "I love her!"  Around four, Dad Olsen and Kristen came in and shortly afterwards, Mom Hinton and Cecilia, Jarom, James, Mckenzie, and Ruby came into my room as well.  One glance and I could tell my mom had taught me new tricks!!!  Ruby's hair was actually curled!!!!  Wow!  She was pampered!!   By this time, Lena and Alyssa were very well done and wanted to go home.  Ladd realized what time it was after awhile (4:35 p.m.) and he quickly said good-bye and headed to work.  Eventually they all left, and I had a couple of minutes before Mom Olsen and Cali showed up.  Mom Olsen had accompanied Cali at her Region Solo and Ensemble, and had brought Cali to the hospital so they could both see Shalyn.  After they left, I nursed Shalyn a little bit more and I've just done more relaxful things since then (such as this blog!!!).

Evidently, Shalyn turned blue in the nursery for choking on some lingering amniotic fluid.  Other than that, she hasn't seemed to have any problems.  She hasn't had a wet diaper since her first voidance in the labor and delivery room, but the nurses are sticking to it.  I'm afraid I don't even have colostrum to offer her, but they tell me they're watching it closely and she seems fine.  I'm afraid it's all an act and once we get home, I'll find we're both in a pickle!!!  I'm sore from nursing quite a bit already.  I've been lazy and haven't made Shalyn latch on deep enough.  My bowels are giving me trouble.  However, that's all I've been dealing with.  I feel very blessed!!!  Now, tomorrow, I'll be off in the races with ten children!!!  Mom Hinton is staying for a week (HUGE BLESSING!!!), and Ladd will take the two weeks off after that.  Hopefully, my help will be stretched out for awhile!!!

Now, to get enough sleep tonight. . . .  :)

Lena, Lena, Lena (and Alyssa, her partner in crime!). . . .

When Lena turned four in January, someone pushed a magical button, and Lena began a reign of terror at our house.  Alyssa does most everything Lena does, and I think it's a mutual relationship of fun.  I've been trying to keep a list of everything they've done, but it's totally possible for me to have overlooked some things along the way.  I no longer remember the order that all of my scribbles came in, so, here's a random list of all their adventures.  I think they're working on my patience levels!

-Lena cut her own hair once and Alyssa's hair twice.  The second time she cut Alyssa's hair, Lena was simply trying to get Alyssa's ponytail out of her hair.

-Lena and Alyssa slicked down their hair with soap several times on different days.  Once I asked them what they'd put on their hair, and Alyssa said, "soap and wetness."

-On one big day, Lena and Alyssa smeared lotion, sunscreen, and marshmallows all over Cecilia's duffel bag she was using for a suitcase.  Later on that same day, Lena took some "washable" green ink and smeared it all over the walls and some furniture.  I haven't been able to get it off.

-Lena has taken to exclaiming, "Alyssa did it!"

-One night, I tried to get Lena to leave my room.  She came back saying, "Mom!  I need to talk at you!"  She told me some pretty outlandish stories after she had my undivided attention!

-One night, she started dancing around in the kitchen.  She exclaimed, "Mom.  This is how a turtle dances!  This is how a cat dances!"  While she was dancing and during a moment she was splayed out on the kitchen floor, I backed into the stack of folded kitchen chairs and one of them tipped over landing on Lena's finger.  After she calmed down, she said, "Mom.  You're not supposed to make a chair fall on my finger!"  She also told me she now had a purple finger.  The Sunday afterwards, she rushed into the Primary room, found her Primary teachers and announced, "My mom made my finger turn purple!"

-Cecilia left the comet out in my bathroom and I didn't make sure it was put back where it was supposed to be.  Lena dumped comet all over my shower floor.  When Ladd saw it, he asked Lena why she'd done it.  She said, "I made it all green!"  Later on in the week, she took the opportunity to dump the rest of the can of comet into my bathroom drawer that has all of my hygiene and make-up stuff in it.  It took me weeks before I was able to clean that one up!!!

-They found some green fingernail polish and painted their sheets and their bedposts.

-They dumped soap or shampoo or conditioner out on my shower floor for some finger painting experience.  They've done this three or four different times.

-One day, I got them dressed for fun in the snow, and I let them go outside in the back to play.  A few minutes later, Lena burst through the door saying it was very cold outside.  I checked on Alyssa and found four boots abandoned under the swing set and Alyssa carefully and systematically tiptoeing through all the grassy spots amidst all the snow.

-We got a game called "Spot It."  I've decided that it's a game that makes Alyssa very possessive.  Alyssa demands all the ones that have baby bottles on them.

-Alyssa's started taking something that she knows I want, then saying, "You have to say Please!!!"  Once I say please, she hands me what she's taken.

-One Sunday, after Sacrament Meeting, Ladd and I started taking Alyssa to the car because she was sick.  She threw a huge tantrum saying, "I not hate this house!" over and over.  (That's her way of saying she hates something -- saying, "I not hate ____________")  I guess I'm not giving her enough opportunities to get out of the house!

-One day, Alyssa walked out without her diaper.  I asked, "Where's your diaper?"  "Hidin'"  "Where?!"  "Here!"  She pointed underneath her bed.  I added, "Okay.  Get it out, please!"  So, she climbed underneath her bed, pulled it out, gagged and handed it to me saying, "Messy!!!!"  (she says that every time she has a messy diaper as well as an overloaded wet one.)

-Alyssa found Cali's make-up one day and took out the mascara and proceeded to color the kitchen wall with it.

-Alyssa dumped two new bottles of fingernail polish remover into the toilet.

-Lena clogged two toilets and a bathroom sink in one week.

-Lena was trying to pour out some mustard onto her plate.  Only the clear liquid was coming out.  She wailed, "It turned to water!"

-One day, I heard the girls getting into some things in the kitchen.  I walked in to see Lena make a mad dash into the laundry room and hear her slam a door.  I went to investigate and found she'd put the parmesan container in the washer.  Later, I found Lena had pulled the parmesan container out of the fridge again, and proceeded to divide it out between two bowls -- one for herself and one for Alyssa.  They were going to have a feast of parmesan.  A little later, I discovered they'd found a new container of marshmallow crème and opened it and stuck some spoons into it.  I insisted that they needed to eat some mac 'n cheese before the marshmallow crème.  By the time they were done with their mac 'n cheese, I had eaten nearly the whole container by myself.  I rewarded them with two big spoonfuls.  I came back in the kitchen when they announced they were done.  They were covered in sticky white marshmallow crème, and I found they'd smeared most of what I'd given them all over the table -- finger painting style.

-Lena and Alyssa discovered my growing stash of Easter candy.  They had a heyday eating what they could get out of the packages.  They did this over a couple of sessions.  Finally, Ladd and I gathered it all together and moved it.  Lena and Alyssa tore our closet apart looking for the candy.  They even asked Ladd and I where the candy was.  :)

-Ladd gave me some flowers for Valentines Day.  After a couple of weeks, they were wilting and dropping their petals.  Lena discovered one of the petals on the counter and said, "Oh no!  A feather has fallen!"

-One night, I was working with the clothes in their drawers in their room.  Lena had some things she'd gathered and placed in their pink play wagon.  She announced that I was in her way.  I told her that her room was very dirty and maybe she ought to clear a pathway to the door if she wanted to roll the wagon in her room.  She went wild tossing items cluttering her floor right and left.  As she worked, she declared, "I have to make a sidewalk!"

-One day in Sacrament Meeting, I was trying to get Lena to be quiet.  Instead, she said in rather a loud whisper, "But his buggers are gross!"  I'm not sure who she was referring to as there were quite a few males in front of us, but it made one of the men on the stand grin.

-Lena took some left over milk in a bowl of cereal and dumped it on Ruby.

-I had to run an errand or two, so I left Ladd watching them.  When I came back, I found Ladd sprawled out on the couch with Sponge Bob on the TV (it's an outlawed series in our house), and Alyssa with a knife in her hands trying to cut open an orange or cutie on the couch.  (Alyssa has a fetish for knives and no fear of them at all!!)

-One day, while I was in talking to Ladd before he headed off to work, I heard the girls doing something other than watching TV.  I came out to find they had assembled in our carpeted living room the following:  the bucket of white sugar, the bucket powdered sugar, the peanut butter container (open with spoons that had peanut butter remnants on them scattered around the room), the peanut butter and honey mix (the same condition as the peanut butter), the fiber gummies (which they thankfully hadn't accessed yet!!!), and several packs of un-opened crackers.

-Alyssa and Lena managed to open a brand new bottle of fiber gummies and eat at least half the bottle.  Lena told me she had lots of mess as well as yucky mess.  Alyssa went through many diapers as well.  Her diapers took several of us to change each time.   One time, Lena said, "Yucky!!!"

-Alyssa and Lena ate a good portion of another bottle of fiber gummies with the same results.  You'd think they'd learn!!!!  They still ask for them, too!

-Ladd let Lena and Mckenzie and Ruby walk home from church one Sunday.  He told Mckenzie and Ruby to stay with Lena.  When they burst through the door, Lena said excitedly, "I ran in puddles!  I ran on the road!"  Mckenzie and Ruby said, still panting for breath, "And she made us run the whole way!!!"  "We're exhausted!!!"  Later, Lena showed me her skinned knee.  I asked if she had fallen down on her way home.  She said, "Someone was in my way.  And I tripped."

-Lena has taken to running in a circle in our living room over and over while she tries to talk to me or whoever she's trying to communicate with at the time.  She's a runner!!!!  And, she's VERY busy!!!!

-Alyssa has started throwing major tantrums.  Even when she isn't throwing a tantrum, she sure can cry for a very long time!

-One day, I had to take something to the Middle School for Cecilia or Jarom.  Since it took quite the effort to get them into the car, I decided to take them for a drive.  Lena told me which way to drive to begin with.  On our drive, she found the bushy hill, the blueberry hill, the scary forest, the tickle forest, the jumpy forest, the lake, and then Lena asked me to find the pond and the poo dog lake.  We didn't ever find the last two. . . .  :)

-Lena and Alyssa dumped almost all of the soap, shampoo, and conditioner that was in the downstairs bathroom out in the tub or down the toilet as well as getting some on the floor.  Cecilia was furious since they dumped out some of her really expensive soaps and shampoos and conditioners that she'd bought with her own hard-earned money.

-Lena and Alyssa found a brand new container of crystal lite drink pouches.  They made the bathroom all red mixing them with water and smearing it all over the walls and such.

-Alyssa has taken to sneaking my purse into the main bathroom and dumping it out looking for some gum.  Sometimes, she takes my purse behind Lena's bed underneath the tall bed that's in their room.  Ladd and Cali have had to retrieve it and all the contents several times.  The last time Alyssa took my purse into the bathroom and ate a whole new brand container of gum, I took off the door knob!  I was fed up!!!  And yet, she can still pull out the drawer and cause the same consternation!  One day, when she locked herself in the bathroom, I put a granola bar under the door a ways, waved it around a bit and told her if she came out she could have some of it!  But, I don't always have something to bargain with!!!!  Alyssa has done this several times with Cali's make-up bag.  On those occasions, she avails herself of the chance to decorate her face.

-Lena and Alyssa escaped on the first warm day.  They ran down the sidewalk, and around to our park.  Mckenzie and Ruby pursued them on foot or on their bike.  I waddled over to the park and found them happily playing on the equipment there.  Lena was in a pair of shorts and a sweatshirt that didn't quite cover her tummy.  Alyssa was in a diaper, a necklace, and Mckenzie's coat-vest-thing.  Great mommy moment!

-Lena's biggest adventures have centered around her new love of hide and seek.  I've never seen such a dedicated four year old hide and seek player!  It started one day when I'd run an errand with Ladd still in bed and James reading before school.  I went to walk in the door and found it ajar.  As I walked in, Alyssa said, "Lena went out there."  I panicked.  I went back outside and looked around.  No Lena.  I went inside and asked James where she was and he admitted he hadn't been paying attention.  We started searching the house yelling her name.  No Lena.  I ran in and woke Ladd up.  He started searching the house again, and I went back outside.  I checked the car and the sidewalks, and finally walked back inside.  I had walked through half of the living room when I saw Lena's head pop up over the counter in the kitchen.  She smiled and said gleefully, "I is hiding, mommy!"  She gave me a heart attack!!!

-Lena hid under my covers several times.  It only took the first time before I became aware of her tactics and looked for her squirming little body underneath my covers.

-Lena started taking things she knew we needed and would hide them to "keep them safe."  She's hidden my keys, my phone, the remote several times, and one time, James was fishing in the toy box upstairs and came to find me holding a bag of brownies I'd set aside for Ladd.  James said, "I found this in the toy box."  Lena piped up and said, "I was saving it for you, mommy!"  At least she didn't eat them!!!

-Kelsy was watching Lena and Alyssa for me during my neurological doctor's appointment.  I got there to pick them up and as I walked in, we looked around for Lena and couldn't find her.  Kelsy said she'd just been talking to her about not going outside right then.  I looked for their snow boots and found only one pair of boots.  We couldn't find any new tracks in the back yard, and Kelsy couldn't find her anywhere in her house.  I couldn't see her anywhere in the front.  Kelsy started trying to find the police's phone number.  I told her I would be extremely be rude and search her house myself.  When I got to one of the boys' bedroom, I saw the covers on the bed start to move and out popped her little face peeking out to look at me.  "I is hiding, mommy!"  She had hidden there for a full 15 minutes!!!!!  Kelsy's comment, once she'd seen for herself where she'd hidden was, "She hid on TOP of the bed!!!"  We found the snow boots in the closet of that room. . . .

-One night, she didn't want to go to bed, so she hid.  I forgot she'd done that and went to the ladies' room.  When I got out, I discovered her bed was empty.  Garrett had been sitting on the couch the whole time and I asked him if he'd seen her go downstairs.  He said he hadn't, and I was too tired to start searching.  So, I stood in the entryway and said loudly, "OK.  Lena.  You won.  You hid really well!  Now, it's time for you to come out."  I heard just the slightest snicker in the piano room. . . .

-One time, after she'd hidden from me, I explained that if she wanted to play hide and seek, when I started calling for her, she needed to count to thirty, then come out.  Later, I amended my statement and told her that I simply needed her to tell me she was going to play hide and go seek before she hid so I didn't get so worried about her.  At that point (it was a Sunday), she announced that she wanted to play hide and seek at the church.  I emphatically said it was NOT a good idea to play hide and seek at the church.  Later, once we got to the church, James came to find me and said he thought Lena was in the kitchen.  I finished what I was doing, and we went to find her.  Just as I turned into that hallway, I discovered Brother Bennion and his son Seth, Brother Burdette, and a lady from the other ward who had been teaching a classroom next to the kitchen.  Brother Burdette had borrowed keys from the bishopbric and the lady was saying, "Do we know whose child she is?"  I heard both of them say they knew who she was and I admitted to being her mother.  I explained that she had wanted to play hide and go seek at the church today and that she evidently hadn't listened to me.  She had locked herself into the kitchen and was making a racket and disturbing the classrooms next to the kitchen.  By that time, she had taken off already.  I assumed she'd made it into the chapel, but Brother Burdette saw her crouched down in the corner and said, "Well, don't loose her again!!"  I had to carry her kicking and yelling into the chapel.  Luckily, church hadn't started yet!!!!

-I needed to have Kelsy babysit for me again, and when I asked her, she said, "Sure.  As long as Lena agrees to not play hide and go seek while she's here!!!"  Evidently, Lena traded her thrills with playing hide and go seek for getting into too many things she shouldn't get into.  Kelsy found Ashton, Lena, and Alyssa had opened 20 packets of Kool Aid on Kelsy's navy blue leather couch and tried to make soup out of it.  They found her stash of birthday presents and opened and ruined one of the toys.  I guess they frustrated Kelsy.  She told me that she finally announced that the only place they could play was on the couch she'd just cleaned off!

-A week or so ago at church, I saw Lena make a dash for the door shortly before church was to start.  Thinking I ought to know where she's going, I followed her.  When I got out into the hallway, I saw she was clear down at the other end about to turn the corner.  She was looking over her shoulder furtively every couple of seconds.  I determined she wasn't headed for the bathroom, so I cut across the gym to try to catch up with her.  As I walked through the other door, I saw that Lena had gotten to that door and just barely turned around.  I realized her goal was the kitchen and she bolted for it.  In my extremely pregnant state, I ran behind her trying to catch the door before she could lock herself in the kitchen again.  Once she realized that I was in pursuit, she squealed and messed up the chairs trying to get away from me.  I caught her before too long and hauled her kicking and squirming back into the chapel.  I plopped her down next to Ladd and said breathlessly, "Don't let her move!"

Crazy week!!!

Some weeks top the charts for being insane.  This last one is our current award winner!

Ladd worked up at Deer Valley on Monday and Tuesday.  He interviewed people applying to Fidelity all day on Wednesday and ended with being interviewed himself for another manager position.  On Thursday, he left at 2 p.m. for another "interview" over lunch and then went onto work from there.  On Friday, he left around noon and came home around midnight.  Saturday, he worked up at Deer Valley, but managed to get off and back home by 1 p.m.  The kids took advantage of his extra time at home and convinced him to help them put up the trampoline.  This year, after several tries, they actually got it to look relatively flat.  (Last year's try made it look like waves on the sea!)

Garrett's week was a marathon week.  On Friday, I told him he'd had a marathon week and he said, "No.  Mom, I didn't run a marathon this week."  He was sooo tired he couldn't even understand me!  Garrett had early morning Seminary at 6:30 a.m., school, track, then practice for the play until 9 p.m. every day.  On Wednesday, he went a little late to his play/orchestra practice because he competed in a track meet that was thankfully at Westlake High School!!!!  On Thursday, after he got back at 9 p.m., he stayed up till 2 a.m. working on homework.  On Friday, he normally doesn't have to go in very early, but it was the last day of the term and so he had to go turn in all his late work before school.  He was excused from classes all day on Friday for play/orchestra practice.  After school, instead of going to track, he had a percussion practice for 2 hours on a song they will be competing with in which he will be playing 9 different instruments!  Evidently, he didn't go to track on Monday as well because he laid down on three chairs he'd pulled together in the middle of the band room for the purpose of sleeping.  He told Cali to wake him up when it was time, but she forgot to wake him.  So, he got a 3 hour nap!  (daylight savings hang-over!)  Friday night, I put my foot down and manually cleared our calendar.  I kept the kids up watching Skyfall instead of driving them around to whatever they normally would have been doing!!!!  Garrett stayed awake for the movie, but then fell asleep during scripture study.  I think we need to work on his priorities!!!  Saturday, Garrett and Cali both had to be at the high school at 6:45 a.m. so they could compete at the BYU Concert Band Festival.  They got home at 1 p.m. and seemed to really enjoy the rest of the day despite all the chores I threw at them!!!!

Cali had a relatively mild week.  She only had track after school.  On Thursday morning, I forgot to mention that both Garrett and Cali had a morningside for Seminary.  And, on Friday, Cali had to be at the school early for a concert band sectional that she was in charge of.  Oh.  I forgot.  She also had to register for 10th grade on Wednesday after school here before going to the track meet.

Cecilia had an abnormal week.  She tried out for a dance on Monday morning.  She didn't make it, but she told me, "Mom.  I'm glad I didn't make it.  It was a weird dance."  On Tuesday, she began the process of trying out for next year's dance company.  Late Thursday night, she found that she hadn't made it for next year.  It was quite the blow to her.  I think she was expecting to be able to get back on since she made it last year.  After talking for awhile that night, I think we came to the conclusion that she'd make the rest of this year an awesome memory and then look for the opportunities to try something new.  Cecilia went and hung out with her friend Kaylee yesterday for a couple of hours.  Cecilia's the one who normally makes dinner lately, and since she was gone and Ladd and I were headed for the Saturday session of stake conference, I told Cali, "Unless Cecilia miraculously walks in the door in the next couple of minutes, you're going to be the one making enchiladas!"  A couple of minutes later, in walked Cecilia!  Cali yelled, "It's a miracle!!!!!"  I don't think Cali was ever so grateful to see Cecilia!!!!  I hope Cecilia felt loved and needed!!!!

Jarom stayed after school on Tuesday for his choir-share.  It's not everyday he has things like that popping up!  For Young Men's that night, he worked on the First Aid merit badge with the rest of his troop.  And, on Saturday morning, he went to the first session of the 2013 Spring BYU Powwow.  He's doing Oceanography, Forestry, and Citizenship in the World.

James had ballroom on Wednesday.  On Thursday, Cali and Jarom on down and I went to James' Blue 'N Gold Banquet.  It was called the "Invention Convention."  To start, we had to make an invention for our centerpiece for our table.  We had several "inventions" (or simply creations) since our children were not in a working together mood.  After our hot dog dinner, we listened to several advertisements and then sat through awards.  When it was over, I sent Cali out with the kids while I helped clean up a bit.  I had to search for several of the kids who hadn't heard my directive to go to the car.  When I got out to the car, James told me Alyssa had just thrown up.  Evidently, she'd tripped going out to the car and she was so upset over her skinned knee she'd cried until she threw up.  We headed over to pick Cecilia up, had scripture study in the car and family prayer as well, then I worked with Alyssa trying to get her bathed and bandaged and into bed.  By the time we were done bandaging her "owie," it took up most of her little leg.  It was a rough night for Alyssa.  For the first part of the night, I simply had her sleep where Ladd normally does.  When he got home, he put her in her own bed for me.

Mckenzie had activity days at Sister Marble's house on Tuesday afternoon.  On Friday, she evidently had a play she was in during school.  She was the fairy godmother as well as Narrator 5.  Her report to me after school basically recited all the mistakes the boys made and only the few things the girls had overlooked.

Ruby had play practice on Friday afternoon.

Lena and Alyssa, on Wednesday, were able to go to Cecilia's Food's class with her.  It was on their babysitting section.  Alyssa felt special to be included this time and Lena told me that she hadn't gotten to do bubbles.  Cecilia told me that Lena had been able to do bubbles, but only for a little bit.  :)  Afterwards, Lena and Alyssa got to hang out at the Spen's house while I went to my doctor's appointment.  Lena was extremely disappointed when I wouldn't let her do playdo after all of that.  I figured they'd had enough playing for one day and should be grateful!!!!

My big excitement this week revolved around this baby I'm about to have.  At the doctor's office on Wednesday, they almost didn't measure the amniotic fluid, but I asked them to make sure it wasn't going up from 25.  My tummy measured at 39!!!  No wonder I feel extremely big!!!  I don't ever think I've measured that big with any other pregnancy!  My amniotic fluid measured at 24.  And, the doctor told me I could be induced this week since I was at a 2 and 70% effaced.  I don't think I believed the doctor, but I'll not turn my nose up at an opportunity to get out of this pregnancy a week faster if he says I can!!!!!  On Thursday, I went to the hospital for my non-stress test and made sure I was scheduled for this Wednesday!!!  My adrenaline has been pumping overtime since then!!!  Lots to do!  I sure don't think we're ready for this baby to come, but it's almost at our doors!!!  I went to the temple yesterday and I guess I must really look pregnant since I had several sisters come up and ask me when I was due and verify that nothing would happen during the few short hours I was in the temple that morning!!!!  One helped me find a locker that was "closer."  Another one advised me not to participate in anything that caused me to stand for long periods of time so I didn't get dizzy and faint.  Another one reminded me that the elevator was a totally acceptable mode of transportation for someone in my situation!  I must admit, I had more contractions while I was at the temple than I had during the rest of my day. :)

This morning was stake conference.  We made it early enough to get seats in the soft seats in the chapel -- and relatively close to the front!  Mckenzie, James, Cali, and Jarom all wrote in their journals.  Ladd wrote in Ruby's journal for her.  The last couple of sentences revolved around a boy she knew from school.  She described him as annoying.  :)  I assigned Cecilia to write a description of Alyssa.  When she got stuck, I reminded Cecilia that Alyssa loved princesses.  Cecilia perked up and said, "Alyssa.  What is your favorite princess?"  Alyssa responded quickly, "pink!"  I think Alyssa's associated those two concepts in her mind!  This morning, before we went to Stake Conference, I discovered that Alyssa can count up to 13 without skipping any numbers!!!  I'm proud of her!  Especially since I know I haven't taught her that!

Our new names. . . .

Cecilia had an epiphany yesterday.  As such, she spent the whole day researching bears:  real or imagined.  And, the result of her findings produced this list she put on the refrigerator.  Jarom tells me she read all the names out loud and let the kids pick theirs out.

New baby girl:  Panda
Alyssa:  Koala
Lena:  Blue
Ruby:  Honey
Mckenzie:  Moon
James:  Siberian
Jarom:  Kermode
Cecilia:  Cinnamon
Cali:  Red Panda
Garrett:  Kodiak
Mom:  Mama
Dad:  Papa

If you haven't guessed, she's assigned each of us to a bear name.  This morning, Ruby called out, "Red Panda?!"  Cali quickly answered, "Yes?"  I have enough trouble remembering the name I picked out for them at birth.  How am I supposed to remember which bear name is assigned to whom???!!!  Sometimes I wonder if my children are a little beyond bored. . . .  At least I didn't get assigned Yogi or Boo Boo.  And, I'm glad to see they changed Lena from grizzly to Blue!  Think what mind associations would have played out down the road if Lena was nicknamed grizzly!!!!

Mckenzie's night time activities. . . .

Mckenzie is known in our family for her sleep walking.  She's had several interesting episodes lately.

One night (typical of most nights), Mckenzie fell asleep on the floor.  After family scripture study, Cecilia went to help Mckenzie go to bed.  She touched Mckenzie and Mckenzie shook off Cecilia's hand, jumped up and yelled, "I'm open!"

Another night after she'd been put into bed, she came out looking for something.  She looked in the living room.  She looked in the kitchen.  She started heading downstairs to look for whatever she was looking for.  I asked her what she was looking for.  She said, "The bathroom."  I took her into the bathroom, and she turned and said, "But WHY?!"  "But WHY?"  She didn't really seem to want to accept that it was the bathroom and her problem would be solved if she simply sat down on the toilet and used it.

There was another one, but I can no longer remember it's awesomeness. . . .  :)

What a week!

We had our normally busy week with a few interesting moments thrown in.  Garrett and Cali had track everyday.   On Tuesday, I had my doctor's appointment and found I had even more amniotic fluid than the week before.  Evidently, having too much amniotic fluid can be a bad thing, too.  I guess we'll see what happens this week. . . .  I did find out that my platelates are up to 145!!!  Now if they'd just stay there until I can have my baby!!!!  Garrett and Cali were able to stay home because the Juniors were taking the ACT.  Weird.  I wasn't complaining, though!  I took Garrett into the doctor to figure out why he was having trouble with his asthma during track the week before.  We're assuming right now that his inhaler wasn't really working.  Our heater stopped working that day, so we had the heater guy come over.  He timed his visit so Garrett and Cali had to find a ride to track.  He finished just as Ladd arrived to take me with him to his special manager's dinner.  We left wondering how Cali would come home from track or Garrett would get home from his orchestra pit practice, or how Cecilia and Jarom would get to YM/YW, or how James would babysit all the girls for that length of time.  The dinner was nice and as it finished, I noticed I had several voicemails on my phone from home.  I listened to them and heard Mckenzie and then James pleading with us to come home right now because they were soooo scared.  It turns out that they were never so excited to see Jarom walk thru the door!!!  They'd turned off all the lights and were hoping they wouldn't be bombed by the aircraft they could hear flying overhead!  Turns out someone was actually doing some re-seeding on the mountain behind our house!

On Wednesday, I went to Shawnalee Emerson's baby shower.  Ruby was really bummed out that I wasn't having one so she could go.

On Thursday, James had his Maturation program at his school.  Ladd was able to go although after participating in a phone meeting, Ladd climbed in bed sick.  Garrett and Cali had solo and ensemble and I played for Cali's solo.  Garrett didn't require an accompianist.  They both did just fine.   I went from there to the store and then to the tryout dance parent meeting for Cali where we heard how they're changing the program quite drastically for next year.  Then, I went to the R.S. birthday dinner.  Then I ran home and got the kids going to bed and then I took Jarom for his Deacon only basketball tournament.  Our ward came up with 10 Deacons and they stood anticipating their opposing team and in walked a group of supersized deacons which their bishop came along to verify.  One young man was extremely developed and looked like he was about to get his mission papers in the mail.  Our team were quite disappointed, but they put up a good fight.  The final score was something like 54 to 36.  The referee didn't call any fouls on our team. . . . :)

Friday was Cali and Cecilia's YW winter campout, so we rushed to get them packed and off.  Both Mckenzie and James had movie nights nearby.  Ladd got home as they were just getting home.

Saturday was fairly frustrating for me.  Garrett had to be at the school all day starting at 8:30 a.m. for his orchestra pit practice.  Ladd went to go skiing with his friends Kyle and Brent up at Deer Valley.  I had started the night before trying to sort through all of our clothes bins.  I desperately tried to finish this project.  It was an all day activity.  The kids all told me they weren't willing to help me clean, so we'll be starting this week with a fairly dirty house.  I managed to scrape together enough help to get the house decent, though.  Cali and Cecilia came back with  great reports of snowball fights, sledding, and snowshoeing.  I spent the night tying to make dinner, clean the house, doing baths, and getting family scriptures done so I could finally go shopping late at night.  Ladd came back from skiing and reminded me that we'd had a date on Tuesday and that he hadn't planned on going out that night and that he'd already eaten dinner with his friends.  He rested for a little bit once he got home and then he left around 7:30 p.m. for his Saturday night game night with his brothers.  It was a long day for me.  Thank goodness for the Lord's tender mercies.  At 11:20 p.m., I realized I hadn't read my scriptures yet, so I pulled them out and found my scriptures opening to 2 Corinthians 5:17:  "For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory."  All my frustrations melted away with my tears.  Heavenly Father is sooo aware of me and my life.  I turned the clocks ahead one hour and went to bed.  Today in Relief Society, one phrase someone said stuck with me.  "Heavenly Father didn't send us here to fail."  Hopefully, I'll make it!  Hopefully, I'll come thru with flying colors!

This morning, Alyssa was coughing up a storm (she had been the day before, too).  When it came time for Alyssa to go to Nursery, I was planning on taking her home, but she hadn't coughed hardly at all.  SO, I told the nursery leaders that if she started to cough to come get me, and I guess she lasted clear to the end of nursery!  I was so grateful for my leap of faith so I could attend all of church!!!

This next week is intimidating to me.  Cali has to register for 10th grade this week.  Cecilia is trying out for dance company for this coming year.  Garrett has track after school and then goes straight to his orchestra pit practice till 9 p.m. at night!!!!  We also have Blue 'N Gold for James.  And, Jarom has BYU POWOW this Saturday and Garrett and Cali have BYU Concert Band Festival this Saturday as well.  Ladd is working on Monday and Tuesday up at Deer Valley and the rest at Fidelity.  He's being interviewed this week for a new manager position, too.  It should be interesting!!!!  Here's hoping. . . .

Our Latest Adventures!

Four Sunday's ago, when I stayed home with Ruby, it was the start of a slew of illnesses.  We found out the next day that Ruby had strep.  Then, shortly afterwards, Garrett, Alyssa, and Lena all got sick with an upper respiratory infection that had them coughing, and battling a sore throat and congestion and all that goes with it.  I've since come down with the same thing, and Cecilia has as well.  Ruby's thinking she's getting sick, too, and Ladd is wondering if he's coming down with it.  I eventually went to a new doctor about the crackle I'd been feeling at the end of each deep breath.  I'd been experiencing it for quite some time, and it turned out that I needed an inhaler.  Didn't see that coming!!!  I stayed home with Lena and Alyssa on the 10th during church.  Actually, we all went to Sacrament Meeting, and then Ladd took us home.  Alyssa threw a huge tantrum about hating her house.  It dawned on me that she never goes out of the house unless it's church or some odd thing I decide I have to take all the kids with me to.  I've decided I need to repent.  Alyssa deserves to go other places (as does Lena) just like the rest of us do!

The day we found out Ruby had strep was a test in my timing capabilities.  It was a minimal day and Jarom was supposed to be "job shadowing" someone.  Jarom chose to see what his grandpa Olsen did everyday, and was excited about that prospect; however, it was scheduled after school got out.  It turned out to be a boon since I was able to take only Ruby to the doctor!  I love it when a plan comes together!!  Garrett and Cali had track and Cali had range for Drivers Ed.  I had numerous errands to run along the way of our travels out to Mapleton and back.  Luckily, they were all ones I could do with Ruby, Lena, and Alyssa hanging out in the car!!!  We finished the day off with Family Home Evening.

Tuesday, February 5th, Jarom had his solo and ensemble night for band.  That meant that I had to send Jarom to Young Men's dressed in Sunday best and hope he'd still looked nice when I picked him up early from Young Men's for his time at the Middle School that he was slotted to play his solos.  Garrett and Cali having drivers ed. with Cali's range directly afterwards made it for an interesting night -- especially since Garrett was scheduled to "observe" range on Wednesday and ended up doing it this night!!!

Wednesday, Garrett's final science fair project was due.  I particularly loved the part where I only had to spend time picking up a few items at the store for him.  He did it all!!!!  Cali had a few minutes of her drum major leadership meetings before she headed for drivers ed. and then onto range (Garrett had driver's ed, too).  I had SEP's with Ruby's teacher, James' teacher, and Mckenzie's teacher, although I mixed Mckenzie and James' appointments up in my head and messed things up for James' teacher.  :(  I also met with James' reading teacher and came away feeling much more hopeful that all three of my elementary kids will get caught up at some point (Ruby's already there, Mckenzie's super close, and James has progressed further than I was aware!!!!  Hip, Hip, Hurrah!!!!!).  In the craziness of all that, James had ballroom and scouts!

On Thursday, Cali had a 6 a.m. dance practice that threw my carefully timed morning routine off track.  It was an incredibly long day for Cali, since she had drivers ed. (along with Garrett), and her last day of range (She passed!!!!!).  She also had a meeting for volunteering at the winter guard competition that she was late for and thus, it only took her a few minutes before she was done with the meeting (thankfully).

Friday, Cali had sectionals she was in charge of, Garrett and Cali had track, and Ruby had play practice.  I think James had an impromptu invite to a movie night at one his friends from his Primary class.

Cali and Cecilia had to be up early on Saturday to volunteer at the Saratoga Springs Polar Plunge -- a fundraiser for people in need.  I had a Stake R.S. meeting that was quite uplifting -- something I really needed!  I had been "down" for a couple of weeks.  Everything just seemed too hard.  Ladd pointed out that not going to church would have an effect on my well-being!  That night was a stake dance -- the first dance for Cecilia!!!!

Feb. 10th, we all went to Sacrament Meeting, but I took Lena and Alyssa home since they weren't feeling well (This was the tantrum day for Alyssa I already alluded to).  After choir was over, Ladd and Ruby on up went to Kaleb's Court of Honor.  Cali had a meeting she had to come back for, so Ladd was able to take the food I'd prepared back with him to add to their potluck gathering.

This week, (Feb. 11th - 17th) Garrett and Cali had drivers ed after school on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday as well as track on Monday and Friday.  I think Garrett hurt himself at track either on Monday or the week previous, so it was just Cali doing track for the next two weeks.  Cali and Cecilia took turns going in early for dance making it a bit of a challenge to get them to their dance practices and Garrett to his early morning seminary on time.  Mckenzie had Activity Days, James had scouts and ballroom dance, the oldest four had Young Men and Young Women's Tuesday night, and Ruby had play practice.  Tucked in all around these "normal" activities were SEP's for Garrett and Cali where I tried desperately to talk to all of their teachers, but just couldn't manage it in the time given me (although I did talk to Mrs. Hayes, Cali's dance teacher for a whole 1/2 an hour on what a great dancer Cali is -- I loved that 1/2 an hour immensely!!!).  I did talk to Mr. Mangleson as well about Cali as drum major for next year and what that might be like (what to expect), and he volunteered that Garrett is doing awesome as well.  Love hearing comments like these!!!!  Garrett wasn't with us since I think he stayed home from school that day because of being soooo sick.  Cali helped Sister Wilkins make pies on Monday afternoon.  I had a doctor's appointment on Wednesday in Saratoga Springs.  The nurse attempted to take my blood three different times and didn't get a drop from any of the attempts.  Finally, Dr. Lamereax came in and did a butterfly in a vein on my wrist and managed to get out 3/4ths a tube.  I've had major bruises from those four attempts!  And all of that for wanting to know what my platelates are!  It was Valentines Day on Thursday!!!!  I woke up to flowers and chocolates from Ladd!  I attempted to make brownies in the shape of hearts -- backfired rather extensively -- it's the thought that counts, right? Lot's of mess from all the wrappers, as usual.  :)  James had another movie night on Friday that was still a surprise to me.  Saturday morning, the Miamaids kidnapped all the "new" miamaids for breakfast.  Lena was quite the entertainer for the whole group of girls that trooped through our house to find Cecilia.  (Cali was already gone :)  Later on, Cali went and volunteered for the Winter Guard Competition.  Ladd went to Chad's house around 8 p.m. to play games with them and Kraig and Brandon.  I know he loves playing games with his brothers.  It's becoming a weekly event, one that always tends to make me more aware of the lack of "breaks" I get.  Currently, simply having a shower is my break.  Ladd tries hard to fit in a quick date before he heads over, but he's definitely in a hurry to get there.  Makes me wonder what he'd prefer!  Ladd worked up at Deer Valley from Friday, Feb. 15th thru the 19th (Tuesday).  So, on Sunday, even though we had kids who were sick, I took everyone to church for Sacrament Meeting.  Alyssa and Cecilia ended staying at home for the rest of the time, and I tried very hard not to talk or breath deeply since it meant a coughing fit for me.  I enjoyed going to church for the whole church block!  Makes me sooooo grateful for church and the uplift it brings into my heart.

On Monday, the 18th, all the kids were out of school!  I had them help me get the house in order.  Cali had a marching band leadership party that she enjoyed.  Cecilia stayed home from school on Tuesday because of how sick she felt.  It allowed me to go to Garrett's registration assembly.  We tried to register Garrett this week.  It was a long process to get what he wants on his schedule.  It took several weeks to get it finalized, but it's all done now! (March 3rd)  This week had all the "normal" stuff in it.  Cecilia made it into Tylar's piece for dance company!!!!  We all rejoiced with her because we had prayed for her as a family during her tryout.  A little bit of prayer power for the Olsen's!!!!  Cecilia said they only took 16 people and she counted as they read out the names.  When they'd called out 15 people, she thought the last one couldn't possibly be her, but it was!!!!  Garrett and Cali finished up the drivers ed class!  Cali only lacked the driving on the road for her experience to be finished.  I did all of my visiting teaching in one fell swoop on Thursday morning, and rushed home to talk to my mom and dad for a few minutes while they were here.  Later that same day, we had SEP's for Jarom and Cecilia.  Friday was a bit hectic because Cali started her first "road" for drivers ed after her sectional and during her normal track time, Ruby had play practice, Jarom packed and left on a campout, Garrett had a double date with his cousin, Kaleb, Cecilia had a birthday party, and James had another unexpected movie night (I wonder why I can't seem to anticipate this!!!!  I suppose because he's 10?!!!).  I tried to do some of my shopping that night as well.  Saturday morning Cali and Cecilia got up at 4 a.m. to go do baptisms for the dead.  Garrett and Cecilia had their names on the same recommend and Garrett had almost been able to go on Tuesday night, but it was cancelled because of lack of leaders.  I guess the leaders were all needed in a board of review where Jarom was approved for his STAR RANK!!!!!  So, when Cecilia got to the temple, they found her recommend was expired.  She sat most of the time in the foyer, but then, one of the temple presidency talked to her and she had time enough to be bumped up in front of everyone to simply do some baptisms.  Cali rushed back to make it in time for her 2nd bout of road for drivers ed.  Mom and Dad Hinton came by, but most of the kids were sleeping.  Jarom had made it back from his winter campout at 8:30 a.m. and had already had his shower and decided he needed more sleep.  Ladd was up at Deer Valley again, but got released early.  Thankfully, he made it back okay since it was snowing up a storm!  He said it took him 2 hours to make it back.  We were going to go up to West Valley City to wish the Belka's a happy 60th birthday, but we went to Olive Garden instead.  Jarom and Cecilia had a birthday party at the Bennions for Hunter, Leah, and Laura's 14th birthday.  Ladd hurried us out of the Olive Garden and over to Chad and Corin's where I sat while they played their game.  I made it back in time to take Jarom and Cecilia home.  On Feb. 24th, we sang "Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing" in church.  It was an incredibly high arrangement, and it stressed us all out, but it turned out very nice!!!  Today the bishopbric suggested we just do that arrangment for Ward Conference and I had to assure them we had another song we were working on for ward conference!!!  I think everyone would've rebelled had I told them we would sing it again!!!!  Cali had several presidency meetings after church and Garrett and Ladd had their missionary prep class as well as one home teaching appointment.  After all that, we went out to Mapleton.  I spent the night talking to all of my siblings at different times trying to come up with a possible date for our Hinton Reunion this year.  It's incredibly difficult and hard for me to remember that I'm supposed to be doing it for this year!!!

This last week, Cecilia got into another dance piece for Dance Company!!!!  I actually did some cleaning during the day which put my back out for a couple of days.  Cali put in long hours over a couple of days in the final push to get ready for her Alliance Dance Company concert on Thursday night.  Garrett went back to track since winter conditioning is over and it's full fledged track now.  He's had some interesting experiences with his long distance running and his knee is hurting him now.  On the first day back, Garrett's lungs completely closed off while he was doing sprints.  I need to call the doctor and figure out what's going on with his exercise induced asthma.  He's been running fairly well for having those two complaints, but he doesn't feel like he's at his tip top shape to be doing incredibly awesome!  On one run, he thought he was only running a 400, and it turned into a mile before he was done.  He shaved two minutes off his time with that run!!!!  Cali had early mornings on Tuesday and Thursday to finish up her road experience for Drivers Ed.  She passed!!!!!  Ladd took (Ladd's brother, Lane's wife) Mindy and her kids up skiing on Tuesday which left me without a babysitter for my doctor's appointment.  Thankfully, Sister Hasson stepped in and graciously offered for them to come play at her house until the older kids came home.  At my doctor's appointment, they tested me for Strep B, said I was dilated to a 1 (Either the doctor's dilusional or extremely positive!), and said I had plenty of amniotic fluid still.  The doctor said this baby's a big baby already  (hmmm.  Can we just have it now?!!!! :)  And, I went over to the hospital for a non-stress test.  The baby showed them her somersaults and boxing capabilities -- all's well there.  :)  That was all on Tuesday.  On Thursday, I had an IEP for James and came back feeling better about what they're doing for him.  I was going over my calendar and updating it shortly before the kids came home, and somehow got it into my brain that Cecilia's BYU day of dance form was due that day (which I hadn't signed yet), so I rushed over to the middle school just before they got out and ended up taking Jarom, Cecilia and two of her friends home with me as well as Cecilia reminding me it wasn't due until the next day.  It put a dampner on the whole cleaning thing since the kids just had to watch "Dr. Who" and "Psych" before we headed off for Cali's concert.  Something I keep forgetting as well is that Garrett's been practicing with the pit orchestra for the high school's play "Once Upon a Mattress".  Garrett's practices have normally fallen on Wednesday for the last couple of weeks, but his landed on the 28th (Thursday) this week.  Cali did a marvelous job during her concert!!  On Thursday and Friday, Ladd had interviews for a new manager position.   March 1st (Friday), I had to rush Cecilia back to the school after school because we'd overlooked one of the signatures (after all my efforts the day before!!!!).  Then, we all buckled down and cleaned in anticipation of having the movie night at our house (better now than after the baby!!!).  They watched Tron and really weren't hooked as a whole.  Some played chess.  Some play rough housed with each other, and others played on a phone someone brought.  I made brownies and homemade cookies and they had a huge discussion on whether our movie night was the best ever.  :)  I'm really not sure what they decided, but I got the feeling they liked the brownies and cookies!!!!  Jarom went to do baptisms for the dead with his cousins.  Garrett and Cecilia weren't able to go because of their expired recommends and Cali realized that it wasn't a prudent day personally to do baptisms for the dead.  Yesterday (Saturday), Ladd worked up at Fidelity on a rare required Saturday.  Garrett and Cali had a track team building activity that lasted for 4 hours.  James actually got a sunburn playing with a huge group of boys over at the Brownings.  He was gone for a couple of hours!!!  I also cut Ladd and the boy's hair, took Mckenzie, Ruby, Cali, and Garrett to birthday parties spread throughout the day, did four batches of laundry, and went shopping at Walmart four different times.  I was in the car most of the day it seemed, and I'd only come home for a few seconds to assess what needed to happen next and make sure it was assigned before leaving again.  Cecilia made it all happen!  She's awesome!!!!  When Ladd came home, he planted some seeds which I'd bought awhile ago but the two youngest girls had dumped out into one cup.  It will be interesting seeing what and if they grow!!!  Ladd and I had a half an hour date at Subway.  We witnessed a rather incredible car accident while we were there.  Ladd hurried off to play games with his brother's at Chad's house (it was his birthday and his request for how to spend his night!).  I bathed Lena and Alyssa in one of my longer stints at home and had the kids do some straightening right before bedtime (they go to bed faster if I'm asking them to clean -- they just disappear sometime along the way :).  When I finally got home from picking Garrett up at 11 p.m., I tackled the laundry, trash, and dishes.  I was grateful when I finally collapsed onto my bed!!!!

Today, we all squeezed onto the front bench at church.  That meant several of us had kids on our laps and it only worked because it was Jarom's day to sit on the stand with the Bishopbric.  It was the day to pay for the first $10 of trek for each child.  I was sooooo proud of Cecilia who paid all $30 in one fell swoop.  Now we just need to figure out how Garrett, Cali, and Jarom can pay us back or earn the next $20!!!!  Garrett and Cecilia were able to get their temple recommends renewed (halelujah!!!!!).  It's been a very quiet Fast Sunday.  Everyone has had a nap except for Jarom and I.  Jarom has written quite a bit in his journal!!!!  YEAH!!!!!  I'm getting closer to being caught up on this blog as a result!!!!  It's 6:15 p.m. and our house is unusually quiet.  Normally I have several kids that are holding their tummy and wailing how hungry they are at this point in time.  I guess I need to get the dinner completely ready since everyone could awake suddenly and I'd have a noisy riot on my hand I'm not prepared to handle immediately!!!  I must say, it's incredibly unusual to have the whole family home and the house this quiet!!!!

I'm really not sure when to have this baby.  When people would ask when the baby was due, I'd say, "Oh, it's all the way next year."  Well, it's actually the right month, and as I look at my calendar, I can't find a convenient time to have this baby!!!!  And, I can't seem to make up my mind as to when it should come!  I suppose this will be exciting to find out when it does make it's entrance into our family!  I'm starting to think about things I should be doing to prepare for this little one.  I really don't know how to fit these projects into my day to day activities, but I suppose I need to figure it out!!!!  This baby is almost here!!!!!
